Tim Smith

General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

Tim leads LanzaJet’s Legal Department and related functions, and is responsible for the oversight of project development and finance, strategic transactions, intellectual property, governance, corporate financings, litigation and other disputes, and risk management.

Tim joined LanzaJet after a decade and a half at Nasdaq-listed CME Group Inc., a leading derivatives exchange offering global benchmark products across all major asset classes. At CME Group, Tim served in a number of executive roles supporting the company’s mergers & acquisitions, strategic partnerships, equity investments, and other commercial relationships and initiatives, including as General Counsel of CME Group’s venture capital arm.

Tim was formerly a corporate partner at the international law firm Winston & Strawn LLP where his practice focused on acquisition, divestiture and corporate restructuring transactions, complex financing arrangements, and general corporate and governance matters.

Tim is passionate about inclusion as demonstrated by his board, officer and volunteer service with Envision Unlimited, a full spectrum of care organization serving people with intellectual, developmental, and psychiatric disabilities, and Illinois Legal Aid Online, an organization that opens opportunities for justice and serves Illinoisans with legal issues who cannot afford attorneys.

Tim earned his Juris Doctor from Columbia University School of Law and his B.S. in Accounting from Purdue University. Tim and his wife, Judy, have three grown children and live in Chicago.
